University College of the North (UCN), is implementing a teacher education program with an Aboriginal and northern focus. The program will be offered in September, 2008 and the specific date for the commencement of duties is to be negotiated. Positions are subject to final budgetary approval.
The Positions: These positions involve teaching the core curriculum of the Bachelor of Education Program; developing curriculum in the area of specialization; mentoring students; liaising with Aboriginal communities and organizations; and participating in other program functions. The successful candidates will demonstrate excellence in teaching and scholarship. UCN is committed to providing opportunities for continuing education.
Qualifications: Candidates will hold a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline; applicants with Master’s degrees and relevant experience may be considered at a lower rank. A teaching certificate with teaching experience in First Nations or public schools (K-12) is preferred, as well as teaching in a teacher education program. Candidates will have demonstrated creative and culturally-relevant instructional practices with adult and Aboriginal learners; as well as experience in program/curriculum development. Good communication skills (both oral and written), managing for results and change, as well as strong interpersonal, organizational, thinking, leadership and computer skills are required. Crucial to this position is a demonstrated ability to understand cultural influences and issues specific to adult learners in northern communities. Experience supervising the practicum for student teachers is an asset, as is experience with distance education. Knowledge of Manitoba Education, Citizenship and Youth K-12 curriculum is preferred. The ability to speak an Aboriginal language indigenous to northern Manitoba is an asset.
